American essayist Charles Dudley Warner once said “Everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it”. The same is the case with the Indian Civil Services Examination. Everybody says that the Civil Services Examination is a very tough examination, but hardly anyone knows anything about it! Yours truly hopes to give you a good idea through three articles on the Civil Services Examination. We would be dealing with the examination scheme in the first, demystify and mitigate “popular” fears about the examination in the second and discuss strategies and guidelines for preparation in the third.
The Civil Services Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission annually for recruiting candidates for the prestigious services like Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service and other Central Services like Indian Revenue Service, Indian Postal Service et cetera coming under the Government of India. The notification for the Civil Services Examination is made in December/January. Candidates holding a graduate degree in any discipline are eligible to apply. They should be in the age group 21-30 years. Those belonging to the general category are permitted only four attempts.
The Civil Services Examination comprises three stages – Civil Services Preliminary Examination (Prelims), Civil Services Main Examination (Mains) and the Personality Test.
