21st September’09 was the day which marked a big difference in the life of Amrita alums, Kozhikode Chapter. They finally took their first step to execute a noble thought that was planned almost a month ago. The basic idea was to make a small contribution to the society in the form of identifying few families that were seeking help to earn their living/basic needs. The group wanted to interact with these families, understand their difficulties and help them to the extent possible. More than the monetary help, the aim was to spread happiness by regularly meeting these families. The idea was conveyed to Amrita Ashram-Kozhikode and they helped the group to know about such families in Kozhikode.
As for a start, the group decided to meet up three families along with volunteers from Amrita Ashram. The experience of meeting these families was not only an eye-opener for the group but also gave them a proud feeling to be a part of Amrita Alumni Group. They were now realizing that the vision of their college was not limited to the course of study alone, but it had become a part of their life.
The first family visited on that day had a shocking scenario waiting for the group. Srijita, a 21 year old girl was lying on her bed struggling to avoid severe shivering and trying to move her legs. Yes, she was suffering from neurological disease and it had affected her brain and legs. She now takes food from a tube as direct intake is almost impossible now. To worsen the conditions, there was no support from her family. Her father and brother did not contribute a penny as they were busy with their own drinking habits. The condition was extremely shocking and after meeting the girl face to face, the group understood the real sufferings in the world. The girl felt happy after being visited by the group and she was also provided with some basic amenities.
The second family visit also demonstrated an alarming situation. It was a disheartening scene to see four sisters (age in 50-60’s) supporting their mentally challenged young sister (35 years). These sisters struggle hard to earn their living as there is no male support in the family. The group discussed the problem faced by the family and also shared some light moments with them. It was a great feeling for the family and also for their challenged sister, after the group’s interaction and their support. The third family hag a girl child facing similar problems to that of Srijita. She is 6 years old now, and has not started walking due to the disorder. She faces difficulty in speech too and can hardly speak few words. Her father is daily wage laborer and incapable to afford the treatment of his daughter. The group’s interaction with this family was also a great experience for both family and the group.
Overall, the group feels lucky enough to have studied in an institution like Amrita, which provides them a platform to serve the society and use their education for the betterment of the nation. After all its Amma’s grace that has induced such a noble thought in the minds of Alums here at Kozhikode. The group thanks ‘Amritians’, that plays a major role to bring them together. We learnt this from our Alma Mater!!...
